Ancient Greek literary works such as Homer’s “Iliad” and “Odyssey”, Sophocles’ tragedies and Aristophanes’ comedies are considered classics of world literature. These texts continue to be read, studied and adapted in various forms, both on stage and screen.

Education

The ancient Greek educational system, known as “paideia”, focused on developing minds and educating citizens. The idea of education as a path to self-improvement and intellectual development is still present in today’s educational systems around the world.

Sport

Ancient Greece was known for hosting the Olympic Games, which took place every four years in honor of Zeus. This event was one of the first international sports meetings and became the inspiration for the modern Olympic Games, which are now one of the most important sporting events in the world.

Philosophy

Many ancient Greek philosophers, such as Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, laid the foundations for modern philosophy. Their theories on ethics, politics, metaphysics, and logic influenced thinking and are still discussed by philosophers around the world.

Language

The Greek language was one of the most important classical languages of antiquity. Its influence can be seen in many fields, such as medicine (e.g. anatomical terminology), science (e.g. scientific terms), and philosophy (e.g. philosophical terms).

Architecture

Ancient Greek architecture such as Doric, Ionic and Corinthian columns continue to inspire many modern buildings. Many buildings, such as government buildings, banks, museums and theaters, use architectural elements and styles taken from ancient Greece.

Art

Greek art, like vase writing, sculpture and vase painting, had a major influence on the development of Western art. Many contemporary artists still use motifs and styles inspired by ancient Greek art.

Science and medicine

The ancient Greeks were pioneers in many fields of science and medicine. Hippocrates, known as the father of medicine, introduced a scientific approach to treatment and established ethical principles for medical practice. The ancient Greeks also developed knowledge of mathematics, astronomy, geography and physics, which provided the basis for further discoveries and scientific research.

Culture and values

Many people around the world continue to admire and be inspired by Greek culture and values. Ancient Greece promoted values such as democracy, freedom, beauty and perfection. These ideals are still relevant to many communities and influence the way they think and act.

Mythology

Greek mythology is still present today and influences popular culture. Many films, video games, books and plays are based on the myths and stories of Greek gods, heroes and creatures. Characters such as Zeus, Heracles and Medusa are well known around the world.

Places worth visiting:

Athens

The capital of Greece is an important place related to ancient Greece. The Acropolis of Athens is the most important monument, home to the Parthenon
 – an impressive temple complex dedicated to Athena Parthenos. It is also worth visiting the Agora,
 the ancient marketplace and the center of Athens’ political and social life.

Delphi

It is a place of worship and prophecy in ancient times. There is a temple of Apollo where priests issued prophecies. It is also worth seeing the Historic Archaeological Zones of Delphi, where you can admire the remains of the ancient city.

Olympia

It was the site of the ancient Olympic Games,
 the most important sporting event of that time.
 You can visit the ruins of the stadium, temples, administrative buildings and other facilities related to this historic event.

Epidaurus

It is a famous ancient monument, home to the Epidaurus Theater, one of the best-preserved ancient theaters. The theater was a place for performing dramas and performances in ancient Greece.

Mistras

It is an ancient city near Sparta that has been preserved in excellent condition. It is known for its impressive fortifications, palaces, churches and other buildings that are excellent examples of Byzantine architecture.

The island of Crete

Crete is the largest island in Greece and was the site of the development of one of the oldest European civilizations, the Minoan civilization. In Crete,
it is worth visiting the Knossos Palace, which was the administrative and cultural center of the Minoan empire.

Santorini and Mykonos islands

Although they are not directly related
with ancient Greece, the island of Santorini
and Mykonos offer beautiful scenery
and are popular tourist destinations.
In Santorini, it is worth seeing the ruins
of the ancient city of Thera, while Mykonos
is famous for its charming white houses
and narrow streets.
