Greece is a country with great tradition and culture, unfortunately many old buildings have been destroyed.

One of the most spectacular and unique places to visit in Greece. They are located on huge monolithic rocks in the Thessaly region, in the north of the country. The word “meteor” means “high above” or “sky-high”, which perfectly describes these monasteries that literally rise high in the mountains.

Closer to God

Meteors are sandstone rocks that reach up to 540 m above sea level. On their peaks, several hundred years ago, Greek monasteries were built by human hands, i.e. places where God meets man.

To this day, only 6 of the 24 buildings have survived in a condition suitable for living and visiting. This is one of the most breathtaking places you can see in Greece.

Construction

The monasteries of Meteora were founded in the 11th century and were isolated places of prayer and meditation for Orthodox monks. Originally there were about 24 of them, but currently only six of them are operational and open to tourists. These are: Great Meteor, Saint Stephen, Rousanou, Varlaam, Agia Triada and Agios Nikolaos Anapafsas.

The monasteries in Meteora were founded in medieval times, when monks, seeking seclusion and spiritual development, settled on these rock formations. Building buildings on hard-to-reach rocks was intended to protect monks from external dangers and enable them to concentrate on their spiritual life.

The monasteries of Meteora are still inhabited by monks who lead a life of prayer, contemplation and work. Monks live according to strict rules, devoting themselves to prayer, work in the monastery and living a simple, ascetic lifestyle

Sightseeing

The monasteries of Meteora are open to tourists who can visit them, provided they follow the appropriate rules and etiquette.

Please remember that this place has great religious significance, so it is important to maintain appropriate respect and silence.
